At Hurstville Music Centre, we believe that learning music is about more than individual lessons. It’s also about experiencing the excitement of making music together.

Our students have the opportunity to be part of our Student Rock & Pop Band Program, where musicians can come together, rehearse as a band and perform live at HMC concerts, showcases and events.

Whether you’re learning guitar, bass, drums, piano, keyboard, singing, saxophone, flute, clarinet, violin, viola or another instrument, playing in a band or ensemble is a fantastic way to take your musical skills to the next level.

🎸 What Is the HMC Band Program?

Our band program gives students the opportunity to experience what it’s really like to be part of a contemporary rock or pop band.

Students learn how individual instruments and vocals come together to create a complete song, while developing practical musical and performance skills that aren’t always possible to learn during an individual music lesson.

Band rehearsals are guided by one of our experienced HMC tutors, who helps students work together, develop their arrangements, understand their individual roles and build confidence as a group.

Students can learn about:

🎸 Playing guitar and bass as part of a rhythm section
🥁 Keeping time and locking in with the drummer
🎹 Using piano and keyboards within a band arrangement
🎤 Singing lead and backing vocals
🎷 Incorporating saxophone and other wind instruments into contemporary music
🎺 Exploring how brass and other wind instruments can contribute to a band
🎻 Using violin, viola and other string instruments in creative contemporary arrangements
🎶 Understanding how different instruments fit together
🎧 Sitting in a mix and learning how to listen to the overall sound
🎼 Arranging and developing songs for live performance

🤘 It’s Not Just Guitar, Bass & Drums!

While the traditional rock band might feature guitar, bass and drums, contemporary music is much broader than that.

At Hurstville Music Centre, we’re interested in exploring what different instruments can bring to a band.

A saxophone might add a powerful solo or melody line. A violin might provide a completely different texture to a pop song. A keyboard can add everything from piano and organ sounds to atmospheric layers, while flute, clarinet and other wind instruments can be creatively incorporated into the right arrangement.

Our tutors can work with students to explore how their particular instrument can contribute to a contemporary band sound.

This means students don’t necessarily need to play a traditional “rock band” instrument to enjoy the experience of playing in a band.

🎤 From the Rehearsal Room to the Stage.

One of the most exciting parts of the HMC Band Program is the opportunity to perform live.

Our student bands can be invited to perform at Hurstville Music Centre concerts, showcases and other HMC events throughout the year.

This gives students something exciting to work towards and allows them to experience the thrill of performing with their bandmates in front of a real audience.

It’s one thing to learn a song in your bedroom or during a private lesson — it’s another thing entirely to stand on stage with your band, hear the count-in and play the song together in front of an audience!

🎶 Learning What It’s Really Like to Be in a Band.

Being in a band isn’t simply about learning your own part.

Students learn how to listen to the musicians around them, follow a song structure, respond to cues, maintain timing, adjust their volume and dynamics, and understand how their individual contribution fits into the overall performance.

They also learn what happens when things don’t go exactly according to plan — and how to keep playing!

These are practical skills that can only really be developed by playing with other musicians.

🎭 Building Confidence Through Live Performance.

Performing in a band can be a fantastic way for students to develop confidence, communication and teamwork skills.

Students learn how to listen to one another, respond to what’s happening around them, recover from mistakes and keep playing — all while staying focused on entertaining the audience.

Our tutors encourage students to become not just better musicians, but better performers.

From learning when to step forward for a guitar or saxophone solo, to understanding how to support another musician, move confidently on stage and connect with an audience, the HMC Band Program introduces students to many of the practical skills involved in live music.

The HMC Band Program is suitable for students who are interested in rock, pop and contemporary music and would like to experience playing as part of a group.

Band opportunities may be available for students learning:

Students are matched according to their playing level, musical interests, availability and the requirements of each band or ensemble.

Participation is subject to available places and suitable band arrangements.
